Legend has it that Friar Pedro Gigante, the Franciscan monk who gave this wine its name, brought the first Verdelho vine cuttings from Sicily to the island of Pico.<\/p>\n
These vines\u2014Arinto dos A\u00e7ores, Verdelho, and Terrantez do Pico\u2014have survived and continue to thrive, protected by stone walls called \u201ccurrais,\u201d which are built by hand. These walls, the result of hard work and dedication, not only shelter the vines from maritime winds and sea spray but also have a striking visual impact, forming a magnificent lacework of stone.<\/p>\n
First launched on the market in 2003, Frei Gigante wine is essentially made exclusively from our native grape varieties\u2014Arinto dos A\u00e7ores, Verdelho, and Terrantez do Pico. It is characterized by a fragrant, fresh, and surprising palate, with a straw color and golden hints, a slightly toasted fruity aroma with honey tones, and flavors of tropical fruits supported by lively acidity.<\/p>\n
